The beauty industry is finding innovative ways to address the issue of food waste by incorporating natural materials into their products. French perfume brand Etat Libre d’Orange, for example, has launched a fragrance called I Am Trash, which uses upcycled fragrance industry waste, expired flower petals, previously distilled wood chips, and discarded fruits from food production. Other brands like Kiehl’s and Juice Beauty are also using by-products such as quinoa husks and “ugly” grapes in their skincare products. These natural materials not only offer nutritious ingredients but also provide vitamins and antioxidants. Beauty brands like Fruu, Optiat, and Further are also repurposing food waste to create lip balms, scrubs, and other body care products. The University of Leeds has even developed a technology to extract compounds from blackcurrant fruit waste for sustainable hair dyes. In the future, beauty companies may partner with food and drink manufacturers to source ingredients directly. This shift towards utilizing organic refuse showcases the beauty industry’s commitment to finding solutions to its environmental impact.
